I've only been aware of Inktober, and this year I just can't keep up. I've done six of the prompts and only posted two. But I like this year's prompts because they seem to tell a story; I'm hoping even if I don't finish them this month, I can complete the challenge in my own time and then put them all together in one picture which may or may not also be ink.

Because of the story-like feel of those prompts, it occurred to me that it might be fun to launch a "Draw Your Own Advent Calendar" art challenge in December (which of course no one has time for!). What do you think? Is there any merit in this idea? Do you think anyone would go for it?

Hi Jenn! Thank you for reading and sharing your thoughts on Inktober.😊 I felt the same about this year's prompts. They do seem to be connected as a story! It's a great idea to put all the pieces together in one picture. When I participated in other art challenges such as Folktale Week (It's coming up in November), I couldn't finish them in that week but did later when I had more time and then added them to my portfolio!

Draw Your Own Advent Calendar art challenge sounds fun! I'd love to join if you are hosting one.💗 People participate in art challenges in December, too. I did the Twelve Days of Christmas art challenge, which was fun. I enjoyed the challenge because it helped me continue to create through the busy season. Maybe if you keep the prompts simple, people might feel more up to joining because December does get hectic. Good luck!

Thank you! I'll definitely give it (the Advent calendar thing) some more thought. Yes, I would host it, but I'm not sure how many active readers I have who would get into it! I'll let you know if I end up doing it. I also appreciate your perspective and experience.

I hope you are enjoying the challenge but giving yourself grace if you have a day hijacked by other things. Love you two 2020 pieces you included in this post. So vibrant!

Thank you for your kind words and encouragement, Beth💗 It was fun to look through my old artwork and remember where I was in my art journey! Since I’m visiting my family so I’m a little bit behind on posting on IG but it’s totally okay! Looking forward to seeing you very soon😉

Very impressed that you're managing to combine a bunch of them. I was considering that too, but settled on just doing #theydrawtober, and so far I have kept up. I'm also using a limited palette, though drawing digitally. I used to love #inktober but never followed their prompts. So I am kind of feeling sad that I'm not doing it, but also sanguine at not trying to do too much, because (for me) that way lies failure.

Hi Tasha! Thank you for taking your time to comment😊 I love your art! The palette you use is so lovely💗 Like you said sticking to one art challenge at a time makes most sense for most people. For me, I get bored sometimes in the middle of the long challenge so combining few different prompts helps me to keep creating! This is the first year I’ve done all the prompts so far thanks to the new sketching habit. I look forward to following along your theydrawtober art!

Thank you. Yes, I usually get bored, too. So far, I haven’t so really hoping to make it through the whole challenge. I will enjoy following the rest of yours, too. Such beautiful pictures!

I really like the limited color palette you’ve been exploring. The illustration of the girl in front of the mirror is one of my favorites from this challenge—love her expression and that cute button nose!

Do you give yourself a time limit for these sketches? Also, how long does it take you to concept what you’ll draw?

Aw, thank you, Erichan! The mirror one was one of my favorite ones, too. I don't think I've drawn a person's reflection in a mirror like that before! After I finished it, I noticed something was off. I realized that both the right and left hand/arm were on the wrong side😅 I had to redo it to make it look right, haha. It was challenging, but in the end, it turned out the way I wanted.

For my daily sketches, I usually time myself and try to finish them between 10-20 min. That was my plan for Inktober but it ended up taking more time to finish each piece because I'm blending colors in layers. So there's no time limit for Inktober but on average it takes me about 20-30 min to draw for a simple piece and 30 min to 60 min for the more involved piece. For the month-long art challenge like Inktober, I figure out the concept pretty quickly. I try not to overthink and whatever the initial idea pops in my mind, I go with that. Usually it takes me 5 min or less to think about what I want to draw. Then I search for references, which can take much longer!
